Chemotherapy Regimens

Rule

Knowledge of chemotherapeutic regimens for treatment of CRC is essential for nurses to provide safe, evidence-based care. Although the attending oncologist generally chooses the treatment regimen, nurses provide patient education, manage side effects of treatment and monitor patient response.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved 7 agents for the treatment of colon cancer

  • 5-FU (Fluorouracil)
  • Xeloda (Capecitabine)
  • Camptosar (Irinotecan)
  • Oxaliplatin (Eloxatin)
  • Erbitux (Cetuximab)
  • Bevacizumab (Avastin)
  • Panitumumab (Vectibix)
