Intended Audience
The intended audience for this educational activity is oncology nurses who provide care to patients with cancer across a variety of practice settings.
Overall Purpose
This CNE activity is designed to provide an overview of dermatologic effects associated with cancer treatment and key management strategies for nurses involved in caring for patients undergoing treatment with cytotoxic chemotherapy, targeted therapies, and/or radiation therapy.
Learning Objectives
At the completion of this activity, the participant will be better able to:
- Describe the characteristics, clinical presentation, and associated complications of common cutaneous effects produced by cancer treatment.
- Distinguish among dermatologic effects produced by exposure to cytotoxic chemotherapy agents and newer targeted therapies.
- Outline key parameters for nursing assessment of patients at risk for or experiencing cutaneous effects.
- Review evidence- and non–evidence-based management approaches to managing treatment-induced mucocutaneous effects.
