Intended Audience
The intended audiences for this educational activity are generalist nurses and pharmacists, oncology nurse specialists including advanced practice nurses, physician assistants, and oncology pharmacists who provide care to patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) across a variety of practice settings.
Overall Purpose
The overall purpose of this activity is to provide oncology professionals with information on state-of-the-art treatment for CRC, treatment considerations for the elderly, and survivorship issues to assist them in educating, supporting, and caring for patients.
Learning Objectives
At the completion of this knowledge-based activity, the participant will be better able to:
- Review current state of the knowledge pertaining to colorectal cancer (CRC), including risk factors, screening guidelines, pathophysiology and staging, and nationally accepted standards of practice for patient management
- Identify clinical practice implications of emerging clinical trial data relevant to CRC
- Outline approaches to facilitating nurse-physician-pharmacist collaboration in the incorporation of evidence-based interventions into individualized patient care plans
- Using a case study approach, formulate individualized patient care and education plans that
- Incorporate emerging clinical trial data relevant to therapeutic regimens for treatment and toxicity management
- Integrate strategies to assist patients in meeting the challenges of cancer survivorship
- Address unique clinical issues faced by special patient populations (ie, the elderly, those with liver metastases)
