COURSE:  Venous Thromboembolism

DATE PUBLISHED:  Thursday, April 08, 2010

Provided by Meniscus Educational Institute and Meniscus Limited

Supported by an educational grant from Lilly USA, LLC.

Release Date: March 2010

CE Available Until: March 31, 2011

Intended Audience
This continuing education activity is designed for oncology nurses and other healthcare providers interested in the care of oncology patients.

Learning Objectives
At the completion of this activity, participants should be better able to

  • Describe the risk factors for venous thromboembolism in the patient with colorectal cancer (CRC)
  • List three agents commonly administered to patients with CRC that may contribute to hypercoagulability
  • Define the role of low molecular weight heparin in the treatment of venous thromboembolism in patients with CRC

Rationale and Purpose
Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a known complication of cancer; approximately 15% of patients with cancer will develop a VTE. For some patients without cancer, a diagnosis of thrombosis may predict the development of a malignancy. Patients with VTE may also have reduced survival. Despite publication of guidelines, prevention and therapeutic measures for VTE continue to be under utilized in cancer patients. The goal of this educational activity is to close existing learning gaps and improve the prevention, diagnosis, and management of VTE in patients with cancer in order to improve patient outcomes and quality of life.
